Black Mare—“Death Magick Mother”
Magic Bullet Records; 09/15/17—
From the opening notes of “Ingress To Form,” to the ending of “Inverted Tower,” the band Black Mare and their album Death Magick Mother is a sonic form of ethereal darkness with pained expressions of minor-key somberness, all brought together by guitars and melodies that seamlessly traverse clean and shimmering tones with moments of distorted anger. It’s one of the best releases in the realm of gothic music that I have heard in a while. It’s as if Mira decided to keep their melodic alterna-goth sound, but perform it in a way akin to the first wave of death rock. The peppering of lower registry male vocals offer an incredible contrast to the gorgeous, clean female vocals. When joined, they offer a dichotomy of sorrow and hope that adds emotional depth to musical pieces which are already swimming with feeling. The acoustic melody lines in “Death By Desire” helps to bolster why it’s my favorite track on the release. But in all reality, there’s not a bad song on the record. With as much as I’ve waxed poetic about the vocals and guitars, I must admit that the basslines are also completely essential to their sound. This is most noticed on the track “Kala”—they not only help to keep the rhythm solid, but they also walk in such a way as to add a dynamic contrast to the piece. If you are a fan of the more organic brand of goth music—one that has no industrial leanings and relies on instrumentation over synth-effects—I promise you that Black Mare is a band that will not disappoint.—R.G.B.
