Gateway To Hell—“Clovers” E.P.
Unholy Anarchy Records; 07/21/17—
Combining the overly fuzzy guitar and emotion of Goatsnake, the groove elements and delivery of early-90’s Rollins Band, and vocals which have a definite Glenn Danzig feel, the debut E.P. Clovers from Gateway To Hell is a release which will move your body with its bent of grim-metal. Often are the times when people complain that current rock and metal have no soul, no feeling. If you know of anyone that has said this, then put this E.P. on and watch their facial expressions as they realize these are words they are going to have to eat. Though the songs “Tin Roof” and “The Drizzard” best exemplify the essence of Gateway To Hell, it would be impossible to pick just one cut to define the band. From the title-track to the incredibly beautiful acoustic instrumental “Rain For Days,” to the ender “Scorched Earth,” I found myself playing the release many times over—I also have to admit that during this repetition, I found myself jamming to air-guitar unconsciously at times. Though their entire motif has been tried by many acts before, they have found the correct combination to ensure not only the feeling of excitement that one gets when turning 16 and finding their newest favorite band, but also a sense of utter devotion from those introduced to their art. With this being their debut, I see the potential for a long and illustrious career from Gateway To Hell. If you are one of those fortunate enough to be exposed to Clovers, I have a distinct feeling that you will adopt the same mindset upon its completion.—R.G.B. Robb
