Prospekt—“The Illuminated Sky”
Sensory Records; 07/21/17—
Progressive power metal that fuses the best elements of Helloween, early Dream Theater, and the sheer symphonic force of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (minus the Christmas themes) is what you can expect from the album The Illuminated Sky by Prospekt. Beginning in an incredibly Wagnerian way—orchestral, dark, moody—before erupting into their core sound, I would normally say that you get a good idea of what’s in store. This would be somewhat inaccurate because the release has so many musical twists and turns. “Beneath Enriya” has an irreproachable melodic power that is fortified with brilliant piano work. This carries over to “Ex Nihlo,” which begins with the aforementioned keyed instrument setting the tone for a truly inspired piece of music. The entire experience is almost like listening to the soundtrack of a film of epic proportions. “Titan” is definitely the “heaviest” track and worthy of note; though “heaviest” is a relative term when it comes to the musical brilliance that is around every turn of the record. Though the guitar playing is so fluid and without flaw, I cannot stress enough how amazing the piano pieces are. Whether they be played with traditional piano sounds, or heavily synthed effected motifs, they really make the songs into complete expressive thoughts. Though the most mellow song on the record, the track “Akaibara” is the perfect embodiment of the emotional contexts this band can provide. Already having been spun about five or six times, I don’t see this being an album that will leave the playlist of any metal fan, either.—R.G.B. Robb
